Roof replacement in Murfreesboro
Murfreesboro grew so fast between 2005 and 2020 that a whole generation of roofs is wearing out at the same time, a decade earlier than the shingle wrapper promised. This page is about replacing one properly: what the builder left out, what we put back, and what it costs on the houses that actually stand here.
The roof the builder gave you
Drive through Blackman, Salem, or the subdivisions off Veterans Parkway and you are looking at thousands of roofs installed in a hurry during the building boom, most of them the same way: entry-level shingles, four nails each, 15-pound felt, no membrane in the valleys, plastic pipe boots, and a ridge vent stapled over decking that was never cut open.
That roof lasts 12 to 16 years in Middle Tennessee. March and April squall lines lift the four-nail shingles, July attic heat cooks the seal strips from below, and the plastic boots split at year eight. A house built in 2011 is not "too new" for a replacement. It is on schedule.
The older side of town is different. Houses around MTSU, off East Main, and along Old Fort Parkway from the 1960s through the 1990s tend to be on a second layer, and the question there is what has happened to the decking under two roofs and forty years of humidity.
What goes back on

Algae-resistant granules are not optional here. The black streaking on north slopes across Murfreesboro feeds on the limestone filler in cheap shingles and starts inside three summers.
How the day goes
Most single-story homes and straightforward two-stories are one day. The crew arrives around seven, tarps the landscaping and the AC unit, and strips the roof to the deck before lunch; decking gets walked and patched, membrane and underlayment go on, shingles follow. A large cut-up roof in Barfield takes two days, and the deck is never left bare overnight. We do not start a tear-off if rain is coming before we can dry in, which in April sometimes means a two-day slip.

Do you replace roofs in winter?
Yes. Shingles seal on any sunny day above about 45 degrees, and December through February is the fastest time to get on the schedule in Rutherford County. We skip installs during a cold snap below 40, because the adhesive strip will not activate until it warms up and the roof is vulnerable to wind until it does.
