Roof Repairs to Make Before Winter in Murfreesboro: Short List
Winter in Rutherford County is not a snow problem. It is a rain problem with occasional ice, arriving in three waves: the November and December squall lines, the cold rain of January, and a hard freeze or an ice storm once or twice a season that turns a wet roof into a frozen one for a day or two. Our fall prep post covers what to look for. This one is the triage: given a list of things wrong with a roof at the end of September, which get fixed now and which can wait.
How we rank it
Three questions, in order:
- Will water get in during a cold November rain?
- Will wind make it worse before spring?
- Will a freeze turn a small problem into a large one?
Anything with a yes to the first question gets done now. Anything with a yes to the second or third gets done before Thanksgiving. Everything else can wait for a dry week in March.
The five that do not wait

Pipe boots are first because they are the most common failure in the county and the fastest to fix. The plastic collars on 2008–2016 houses in Blackman, Salem and Smyrna crack at the top and let water straight down the pipe into the ceiling. It takes an hour to replace one.
Missing shingles are second because of what is under them. Felt underlayment, which is what most builder roofs have, lasts a couple of weeks exposed before the wind shreds it, and then the deck is bare.
Valleys are the ice-storm item. A valley clogged with hackberry leaves holds water; if that water freezes during a January ice event it backs up under the shingles on both sides. A clean valley with membrane under it shrugs that off.
The three that should happen before Thanksgiving
- Nail pops on the south and west slopes. Summer heat backed the nails out; November wind will lift the shingles above them. $250–$600 per slope to re-nail and seal.
- Limbs over the roof. The oaks and hackberries have been dropping wood all summer. An ice storm loads every limb with several times its weight, and the ones over the roof come down on it. A tree service is $150–$500 for a limb; a limb through the deck is $1,500 and up.
- Full gutters after leaf drop. Clean them in early December. Overflowing gutters in a cold rain rot fascia and the first course of decking. $120–$300 if you hire it.
What can wait until spring
- Algae streaks and moss. Cosmetic through the winter. Soft wash in April.
- A ridge vent that was never cut through. A winter problem only if the attic is showing condensation; otherwise it is a summer fix. $500–$900.
- A single nail pop on a shaded north slope. Seal it if you are up there; otherwise spring.
- Cosmetic flashing rust with no gap behind it.
- A full replacement on a roof that is old but not leaking. January and February are often the quickest months to schedule one, and shingles seal fine on a 45-degree sunny day, so waiting for spring costs you nothing except the chance to pick your week.
What ice actually does here
Real ice dams — the kind that build up in Wisconsin — are rare in Murfreesboro because the snow does not stay long enough. What we get instead is a freezing-rain event every year or two that glazes the roof for a day. On a sound roof nothing happens. On a roof with a clogged valley, a lifted shingle or open flashing, the ice holds water in the one spot it should not be, and the thaw the next afternoon sends it inside. That is why the list above is ordered the way it is.
Doing it in one visit
Most of the "do it now" list is a single morning for a crew: boots, a few shingles, a valley, nail pops on one slope.
